- Title
- Relationship between ethanol intake on insulin sensitivity and pancreas metabolism in people exposed to antioxidants: A systematic review.
- Review Question
- Could the antioxidants administration enhances insulin sensitivity and pancreas activity after ethanol intake?
- Study Type Included
- Primary quantitative studies or mixed methods studies with a quantitative component (using descriptive or inferential statistics methods, with parametric or non-parametric methods), reporting doses or timing of ethanol intake, insulin profile and pancreatic changes. Studies focused on treatment of alcohol dependence without antioxidants were excluded.
- Condition Being Studied
- Ethanol intake, insulin sensitivity and pancreas damage in people exposed to antioxidants.
- Participant
- People aged 15 and over, living in the community; including healthy participants with no pre-conditions for later ill health such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, overweight or obese, impaired cognitive function, functional limitations; on medication that did not affect outcomes; disadvantaged and minority groups. Studies primarily focused on populations with ill health e.g. stroke, coronary heart disease, mental health conditions were excluded.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Ethanol ranks first on the list of abused drugs in many parts of the world. Alcoholism is a chronic disorder, with psychological and physical addiction that affects around 10% of the world population (Hegde et al., 2000). It has been reported that alcohol abuse and dependency occupy third place in the risks to human health in the world (World Health Organization, 2011), where Latin American countries and those belonging to the former Soviet Union represent more than double the risk for alcohol consumption than the global average (González & Alcalá, 2005).
- Comparator Control
- Non-drinkers and healthy
- Main Outcome
- Doses of ethanol intake will be measure as ml/day. Timing of ethanol intake will be measure as days. Insulin profile as mmol/l or mg/dl Pancreatic changes using biochemical markers or histopathological analysis. Measures of effect All of them will be measure such a statistical differences (p<0.05)
