- Title
- Adverse cardiovascular events associated to triptans and ergotamines for the acute treatment of migraine: a systematic review of observational studies
- Review Question
- Which evidence coming from clinical practice is available on the cardiovascular safety of triptans and ergotamines for the acute treatment of migraine? Can triptans or ergotamines increase the risk of serious cardiovascular adverse events in migraineurs?
- Study Type Included
- Observational cohort or case-control studies reporting data on cardiovascular outcomes in patients exposed to triptans or ergotamines for the acute treatment of migraine attacks. Accordingly to the Meta-analysis Of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) guidelines, we will use broad inclusion criteria and subgroup and/or sensitivity analyses will be considered on the basis of differences in design features, outcomes or quality of the included studies.
- Condition Being Studied
- Migraine patients exposed to triptans or ergotamines.
- Participant
- Studies concerning population of migraneurs will be included. No restriction with respect to specific age categories or gender will be applied.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- The review will include studies concerning patients exposed to at least one of the following drugs: - Triptans (sumatriptan, rizatriptan, zolmitriptan, naratriptan, eletriptan, almotriptan, frovatriptan); - Ergotamines (ergotamine or dihydroergotamine).
- Comparator Control
- Individuals not exposed/exposed in the past to triptans and/or to ergotamines.
- Main Outcome
- Any cardiovascular outcome from the included studies will be included in the review.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- None.
