Title
Effect of (–)-epicatechin intake on cardiometabolic parameters – a systematic review of randomized controlled intervention studies
Review Question
Does an oral intake of pure (–)-epicatechin beneficially affect cardiometabolic parameters in humans?
Study Type Included
Randomized controlled trials
Condition Being Studied
Healthy and/or suffering from cardiometabolic diseases (incl. pre-stage)
Participant
Inclusion: Healthy participants and/or overweight/obese participants, and/or participants with cardiometabolic disorders, including (pre)hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, dysglycemia, impaired endothelial function, (pre)diabetes, atherosclerosis, coronary heart diseases. Exclusion: cardiometabolic diseases caused by another underlying disease or condition (e.g., medication) if clearly stated in the publication, other diseases such as cancer), healthy participants in particular life conditions (e.g., pregnancy).
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Inclusion criteria: Interventions with pure (–)-epicatechin provided orally. Exclusion criteria: Intervention with other flavonoids than (–)-epicatechin (e.g., (+)-epicatechin, quercetin), not pure (–)-epicatechin (e.g., intake together with other flavonoids or compounds (e.g., by cocoa, dark chocolate, or green tea)), (–)-epicatechin not administered orally.
Comparator Control
Control treatment: using an (–)-epicatechin-free placebo if (–)-epicatechin was provided as supplement (e.g., capsules, tablets) or an (–)-epicatechin-free control treatment.
Main Outcome
Glucose metabolism (e.g., glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, HbA1c, fructosamine); lipid metabolism (e.g., triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C, HDL-C, TG/HDL-C ratio); vascular function (e.g., blood pressure, FMD, pulse wave velocity)
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Antioxidant status/oxidative stress (e.g., oxidized LDL) and inflammation biomarkers (e.g., CRP)
Study Method
Narrative synthesis, Systematic review
