Title
Effects of guarana (Paullinia cupana) on cardiovascular healthy: a systematic review
Review Question
Does consumption and/or supplementation of guarana have an action on cardiovascular health and control of risk factors in humans?
Study Type Included
Randomized controlled trials will be considered as standard for evaluating the effects of different medical interventions. They should therefore be well designed so that the chances of bias are minimized.
Condition Being Studied
Guarana (Paullinia cupana), a Brazilian plant native to the Amazon region, presents great economic, social and therapeutic importance. Its seed has a significant antioxidant characteristic, due to the considerable presence of bioactive compounds such as catechins, epicatechins, proanthocyanidins, caffeine, and to a lesser extent, theophylline and theobromine, being therefore of scientific interest. The consumption of food sources of antioxidants may represent an approach in inhibiting the damage caused by excess free radicals, becoming an alternative in the prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases, and their associated complications. These diseases constitute one of the main causes of prolonged hospitalizations and are determinant in the allocation of public resources in hospitalizations in the country, significantly implicating the mortality rate in all Brazilian regions. The objective of this systematic review was to analyze and synthesize the main evidences generated by controlled and randomized clinical trials on the ingestion of guaraná (Paullinia cupana), which, through supplementation, encapsulated, powdered or other forms of administration, have implications for risk factors and cardiovascular health in humans.
Participant
They will be considered as human participants, regardless of age (children, adults and elderly), regardless of gender (female and male), cardiovascular disease with or without an association of risk factors (hypertension, high cholesterol, smokers, sedentary, and / or diabetics), making continuous use or not of associated drug treatment.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Studies with administration or supplementation using guarana (Paullinia cupana) in their various forms of administration (powdered and diluted, by infusion or through single capsules or in combination with other compounds having similar active principles, in order to compare the effects of consumption). Administration may be done in divided doses (daily or weekly) or in a single dose (mega dose). Interventions with the presence of a control group will be considered, being considered the participants who received placebo or another type of intervention or no intervention.
Comparator Control
Not applicable.
Main Outcome
Randomized controlled trials, which relate and evaluate consumption and [or supplementation of guarana (Paullinia cupana) to the detriment of cardiovascular health; conducted in humans.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
The associated risk factors of cardiovascular health after consumption and or supplementation of guarana (Paullinia cupana).

Intervention, Meta-analysis, Systematic review
