- Title
- The efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness of Cytisine for smoking cessation: a systematic review and meta-analysis
- Review Question
- Is cytisine effective, safe and cost-effective for smoking cessation among adult smokers?
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: Phase III Randomized controlled trials among adult (aged 18 and over) smokers that compare cytisine to placebo, standard care or other smoking cessation intervention. Studies published in English language. Exclusion criteria: 1) studies where the focus is not on smoking cessation; 2) studies where cytisine is part of a multi-modality intervention
- Condition Being Studied
- Smoking is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Five million adults in Canada are cigarette smokers. Smoking cessation is beneficial for long term health, but many smokers make several quit attempts before success is achieved. Cytisine is a cheap natural plant-based product that may help smokers quit. This review focuses on determining its efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness.
- Participant
- Adult smokers (aged 18 and over)
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Cytisine at any dose or duration of treatment.
- Comparator Control
- Placebo, standard care (as defined in the individual studies), other smoking cessation interventions (behavioral therapy, nicotine replacement therapy, varenicline or bupropion)
- Main Outcome
