Title
Serum copper levels and risk of cardiovascular disease. A systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiologic observational studies
Review Question
Is there an association between serum copper levels and cardiovascular disease?
Study Type Included
Inclusion of studies with original quantitative data of serum copper levels from observational epidemiologic studies (case-control studies, cohort studies, and hybrid studies)
Condition Being Studied
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year. More than four out of five cardiovascular disease deaths are due to heart attacks and strokes, and one third of these deaths occur prematurely in people under 70 years of age. Scientific interest in studying the effect of different minerals, metals, and trace elements on cardiovascular disease can be seen in various recently published studies. However the scientific evidence in this regard is still limited.
Participant
Men and women older than 18 years old.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Serum copper levels.
Comparator Control
Lowest serum copper category
Main Outcome
Stroke (ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke), myocardial infarction, and cardiovascular mortality.
