- Title
- Laboratory critical risk alert thresholds for creatinine results requiring immediate intervention - a systematic review
- Review Question
- What is the evidence for laboratory critical risk thresholds for creatinine results that require immediate medical intervention due to risk of major patient harm? What are these critical risk thresholds and how do they compare in terms of patient outcomes?
- Study Type Included
- Original research articles (not letters, reviews or abstracts only). Observational/interventional, prospective/retrospective studies are acceptable.
- Condition Being Studied
- Renal diseases (both acute and chronic) and generic markers of patient outcomes (hospitalisation, length of stay, mortality).
- Participant
- Inclusion criteria - Human inpatients and outpatients who have had a blood specimen analysed for creatinine at a medical laboratory. Exclusion criteria - Human inpatients and outpatients who have NOT had a blood specimen analysed for creatinine at a medical laboratory.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Patients with critical creatinine results requiring immediate medical attention/action
- Comparator Control
- Patients with normal/non-critical creatinine results
- Main Outcome
- Hospital admission (admission from outpatient facility/home/lower level of care) Length of stay (as hospital inpatient) New diagnosis of acute kidney injury (using KDIGO or similar measure) New diagnosis of chronic renal failure (using KDIGO or similar measure) Mortality (must be linked to illness responsible for change in creatinine, e.g. death occurring within a month of onset or as a result of complications of renal disease that was detected with change in creatinine To compare the quality of studies included in the review Measures of effect As above
