Will preoperative administration of amoxicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, or clindamycin be effective in reducing postoperative complications in patients undergoing mandibular third molar surgery?
Study Type Included
Only randomized controlled clinical trials will be included.
Condition Being Studied
Post-surgical infection (temperature higher, purulent discharge, alveolar osteitis, swollen nodes), pain, edema and trismus after mandibular third molar surgery.
Participant
Patients undergoing mandibular third molar surgery (impacted and semi-impacted) will be considered.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
The intervention will be the preoperative administration of amoxicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid or clindamycin by any route of administration and at any dose.
Comparator Control
The comparison group will be placebo, no treatment or any other active treatment.
Main Outcome
The primary result will be the evaluation of postsurgical infection (temperature higher, purulent discharge, alveolar osteitis, swollen nodes). Measures of effect The results obtained in a minimum follow-up of one week after surgery will be included.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Pain (according to VAS), edema (facial contour measurements) and trismus (reduction of the mouth opening) after mandibular third molar surgery. Measures of effect The results obtained in a minimum follow-up of one week after surgery will be included.
