- Title
- Effects of citrulline supplementation on resistance training responses: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
- Review Question
- Can citrulline supplementation potentiate the effects of resistance training in adults?
- Study Type Included
- Randomized controlled trials in which the primary intervention being evaluated is citrulline supplementation pre-resistance exercise.
- Condition Being Studied
- The effects of citrulline supplementation on muscle soreness, strength and endurance post-resistance exercise.
- Participant
- Inclusion: adults; no exercise restriction. Exclusion: had ingested any ergogenic supplement or anabolic steroids for the six months prior to the start of study; were taking any medication that could affect muscle recovery.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Citrulline supplementation and resistance training
- Comparator Control
- Placebo/non-exposed control group
- Main Outcome
- - Muscle soreness, defined as a general discomfort in a muscle or muscle group. Traditionally, muscle soreness has been measured using the visual analogue scale. - Muscle strength, defined as the maximum amount of force that a muscle can exert against some form of resistance. Muscle strength can be measured by estimating a person's one repetition maximum (1RM) - a measurement of the greatest load (in kg) that can be fully moved (lifted, pushed, or pulled) once without failure or injury. - Muscular endurance, defined as the ability of a muscle to repeatedly exert force against resistance. Muscular endurance tests are those in which a number of repetitions are performed with submaximal loads. Measures of effect Effect size.
