- Title
- Microbiological and clinical oral changes in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with nickel chromium brackets
- Review Question
- The placement of nickel-chromium brackets generates changes in the composition and quantity of bacterial plaque, facilitating the growth of cariogenic and periodontopathogenic species and, in consequence, clinical changes in the oral cavity, measurable by: plaque index, probing depth, and bleeding on probing.
- Study Type Included
- Randomized and non-randomized clinical trials
- Condition Being Studied
- Oral microbiome composition (cariogenic bacteria, periodontal pathogenic bacteria), plaque index, gingival bleeding, gingivitis, periodontal disease, root resorption, enamel demineralization.
- Participant
- Sistemically healty patients
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Orthodontic treatment with nickel-chromium brackets versus no treatment, since it is the most common type of fixed orthodontic appliance used nowadays in our environment and has been related to the disruption of the oral microbiome.
- Comparator Control
- The bibliography concerning this subject is abundant and very heterogeneous, including multiple studies comparing the consequences of the use of multiple different orthodontic interventions. Hence, it is difficult to establish a concrete treatment to compare with. Therefore, the authors decided to restrict the review to the comparison of the oral microbiome and its clinical consequences with and without the use of nickel-chromium brackets, in order to provide brief and valuable conclusions.
- Main Outcome
- Microbial changes (bacterial populations, enhancement of concrete pathogens, total bacterial recount,...), Gingival bleeding, Plaque index.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Gingival enlargement, Gingival recessions, Periodontal disease, Root resorptions, Enamel demineralisations, caries risk or any other outcome that is related to the use of nickel-chromium brackets.
- Study Method
- Systematic review
