Condition Being Studied
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) consumption or supplementation for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Chromium consumption or supplementation for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Participant
Inclusion criteria: Adults over the age of 18 with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes with or without obesity. Exclusion criteria: Adults with type 1 diabetes, pediatric patients, patients with metabolic syndrome, gestational diabetes.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Intervention: Cinnamon consumption or supplementation, or Chromium consumption or supplementation with or without medication related to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Comparator Control
Placebo or treatment with or without active medications, such as insulin, oral hypoglycaemic agents.
Main Outcome
Postprandial blood glucose, serum insulin, HOMA-IR, glycated haemoglobin A1c , fasting blood glucose, fasting blood sugar, advanced glycation end products (AGE), insulin sensitivity and insulin resistance, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein and triglycerides. Measures of effect More than four weeks of consumption and / or supplementation.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Reducing nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kB), Sirtuins, Interleukin 6, Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, malondialdehyde, total antioxidant capacity, high sensitive-C-reactive protein, and anthropometric profile. Measures of effect Four or more weeks of consumption and / or supplementation.
