- Study Type Included
- Included studies: original research articles involving human studies or in vitro studies with human samples. Excluded studies: any non-peer-reviewed article, conference proceedings, editorial, books, theses.
- Condition Being Studied
- Dentistry. Health effects of metals used for dental applications.
- Participant
- Inclusion: all case reports and studies involving patients treated with fixed or removable prosthetic or orthodontic constructions containing Cobalt-Chromium alloy, or in vitro studies with human samples and Co-Cr dental alloy. Exclusions: Studies involving to non-dental procedures (such as orthopaedic, valvular, breast or limb prosthesis).
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloys have been used in dentistry for a long period by now because of its mechanical properties and for economic reasons but there have not been many studies focusing on its biological impacts in dentistry. Interventions including all types of dental treatment by using CoCr dental alloy (prosthodontic, orthodontic). Exposures: all negative impacts of Cobalt or Chromium as allergy, sensitisation, irritation, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity or confirmation in the absence of adverse effects.
- Comparator Control
- All studies meeting the inclusion criteria will be included. If studies include a control group results will be compared to those of the intervention group.
- Main Outcome
- Primary outcome: evaluation of the safety of the metal alloy which is widely used in dentistry. Measures of effect relative riks reported.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Additional outcome: regarding the ongoing metallic Cobalt reclassification to CMR IB substance by the Agency of EU, the use of medical CoCr alloys is put to doubt, with this review we would like to systematize knowledge about CoCr safety and that would be useful for all dental community as it is the responsibility of the dentist to select the most appropriate materials to be used. Measures of effect the dentist could more evaluate the risk or safety of CoCr dental alloy and explain to this patient why he thinks it's safe/not safe to put this alloy to the mouth even if Co is classified as cancerogenic.
