- Title
- Carrot and carotene and multiple health outcomes: An umbrella review of the evidence
- Review Question
- The associations between carrot and carotene and multiple health outcomes
- Study Type Included
- Meta-analyses of interventional studies (randomized and nonrandomized controlled trials) and observational studies (cohort and case–control) that assessed the association of carrot and/or carotene and health-related outcomes were included regardless of ethnicity, sex and country of participants. Studies comparing the intake of carrots and/or carotene, including high versus low, placebo, and any linear or nonlinear dose–responses, were all included.
- Condition Being Studied
- Carrot is consumed widely and deeply loved by people. Carrot is recognized to have multiple beneficial effects on human health because it contains many important nutrients, including antioxidant ingredients, fiber, and vitamins. Therefore, they play an important role in maintaining health and preventing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Carotenes are the most important nutritional components of carrots. β-Carotene is partly directly converted into vitamin A once ingested in the intestinal tract or converted into vitamin A in the liver. It plays a vital role in maintaining the normal visual system, preventing night blindness and preserving skin health, as well as regulating certain cellular processes. Moreover, as potent antioxidants, α-carotenes and β-carotenes have been proposed to maintain health and prevent diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. With the increased appreciation of health, many research studies have been conducted examining the impact of carrots/carotenes on humans. Numerous epidemiologic studies have been reported regarding the association between carrot/carotene and health outcomes, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), fracture, various types of cancers and so on. Although a large number of meta-analyses have summarized the association between carrot/carotene and health outcomes, there remains a lack of comprehensive evidence.
