Inclusion criteria: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluate effects of beta carotene on death from any cause in adults (age ≥18) with any health condition; studies that compared beta carotene supplementation at any dose with placebo, active treatment, or no treatment. Exclusion criteria: Studies not published in English; Studies that are case reports, case series, or observational studies; Studies in which all the participants received beta carotene (no control group); Studies including pregnant women or critically ill patients.
