Title
Systematic review of methods of citric acid cough reflex testing
Review Question
What are the different methods (i.e. instrumentation and protocols) of citric acid cough reflex testing used in published studies across disciplines?
Study Type Included
All studies, published in peer-reviewed academic journals, that provide a description of citric acid cough reflex testing will be included in the review.
Condition Being Studied
Methods of citric acid cough reflex testing, across disciplines.
Participant
Inclusion: Studies that involve citric acid cough reflex testing, human studies. Exclusion: Animal studies, cough reflex testing with other tussigneic agents (e.g. capsaicin, tartaric acid).
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
The focus of this review is on methods of citric acid cough reflex testing across disciplines. Any studies that include a description of citric acid cough reflex testing will be included in the review. Cough reflex testing with other tussigneic agents, such as, but not limited, to capsaicin, tartaric acid or fog, will not be included in this review. In addition, the review will be limited to studies on human participants, thus, any animal studies on citric acid cough reflex testing will be excluded. Note: citric acid cough reflex testing is not an intervention or exposure, but used as a clinical test or outcome measure. We are interested in the methods, rather than the results, of this test used across studies in the literature.
Comparator Control
In this review, we are interested in the methods of citric acid cough reflex testing used across studies in the literature. We are not comparing one intervention to another. We are interested in reporting the methods (i.e. instrumentation and protocols) used across studies.
Main Outcome
(1) Methods of citric acid cough reflex testing (incl. method of inhalation, breathing time, patient interface); (2) Nebuliser and specifications of the nebuliser (particle size, flow rate); (3) Concentrations of citric acid; (4) End of test criteria; (5) Discipline of study; (6) Participants. Our aim is primarily to report and provide an inventory of these methodological components of citric acid cough reflex testing. Measures of effect Not applicable.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
None. Measures of effect Not applicable.
