Title
Efficacy and safety of Artemisia Annua sublingual immunotherapy in seasonal allergic rhinitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials
Review Question
Does Artemisia Annua sublingual immunotherapy play an effective role in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR)?
Study Type Included
Systematic reviews (and Meta-analysis, if available) of observational and interventional studies.
Condition Being Studied
The prevalence of AR has increased year by year, imposing a significant burden on socio-economics. Recently, Artemisia annua Allergen Sublingual Immunotherapy Drops have been available in the Chinese market and they have been tested and found to be effective and safe in the treatment of patients with SAR with or without allergic conjunctivitis in a series of RCTS conducted by Luo Zhang (2017) ’s team. In the research, we aim to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Artemisia allergen sublingual immunotherapy in patients with SAR and provide further evidence for SAR treatment strategies.
Participant
Inclusion: patients with a confirmed diagnosis of SAR, who did not receive allergen immunotherapy (AIT). Exclusion: patients with SAR who received AIT before.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Artemisia annua Allergen Sublingual Immunotherapy Drops were used for the treatment of SAR.
Comparator Control
Comparator(s)/control: placebo or no treatment. Comparison pairs: Artemisia annua Allergen Sublingual Immunotherapy Drops versus placebo or no treatment.
Main Outcome
The primary outcomes of our study contained two aspects, including the total nasal symptom score (TNSS), the combined symptom, the medication score (CSMS), the combined score of medication and the rhinoconjunctivitis symptom (CSMRS), which were for evaluating the efficacy, and the safety were evaluated by serious adverse events report. Measures of effect Absolute and relative risks for the outcomes outlined above were displayed using forest plots and calculated using random effects models.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Daily total nasal symptom score (dTNSS); Daily rescue medication score (dRMS); total medication score (TMS), visual analog score (VAS); Serious Adverse Events (SAEs), and Adverse Events (AEs). Measures of effect Absolute and relative risks for the outcomes outlined above; and reported hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
