- Title
- Effects of cadmium exposure on child and adolescents development
- Review Question
- What is the influence of cadmium exposure on child and adolescents mental and physical development ?
- Study Type Included
- We will include cohort studies, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies (both prospective and retrospective) containing their own data. We will exclude: different types of reviews, editorial materials, books, opinions and comments or other non-populational studies.
- Condition Being Studied
- Cadmium is one of the most common environmental pollutants in industrialized countries. It has a toxic effect on many human organ systems. Children and adolescents are hypersensitive to the action of toxic elements, which is due to their incomplete growth and development and anatomical and physiological features. To monitor the impact of toxic elements on the health of children and adolescents and identify the early stages of an adverse effect, it is advisable to use highly sensitive indicators of the physical and mental development of children and adolescents.
- Participant
- Inclusion: 1. Children and adolescents ( from 0 to 18 years) exposed to cadmium, an environmental pollutant. Exclusion: 1. Adults exposed to cadmium, an environmental pollutant. 2. Children and adolescents who have undergone corrective intervention due to an increased content of cadmium in the body.

- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- The physical and mental development of children and adolescents are highly sensitive indicators of the adverse effects of environmental factors on the body, determined by fast, inexpensive, and mostly non-invasive methods. To assess physical development, such indicators as body length and its annual increase, the number of milk and permanent teeth, the degree of development of secondary sexual characteristics are used. The mental development of children and adolescents in various age periods are assessed by indicators characterizing the development of motor skills, speech, game activity, the level of intelligence. Cadmium, like all heavy metals, has a negative impact on the pace and harmony of physical and mental development. Identification of the indicators most sensitive to the effects of cadmium will make it possible to include them in the system of monitoring the effects of cadmium on the human body.
- Comparator Control
- We will compare the physical and mental development of children and adolescents exposed to cadmium with the same indicators in children and adolescents without exposure.
- Main Outcome
- The main outcomes will be сhanges in the pace and harmony of physical development (growth retardation, later appearance and change of teeth, delayed puberty) and mental development (later development of motor skills, speech, play activity, intellectual development delay) in children and adolescents exposed to cadmium Measures of effect Odds ratios [OR], risk ratio [RR], relative differences, correlation and regression coefficients [ RC, CC].
