- Title
- Clinical response of biologics, immunomodulators and bismuth subsalicylate in microscopic colitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
- Review Question
- What is the effect of biologics (i.e. infliximab, adalimumab, golimumab, certolizumab, vedolizumab, ustekinumab or tocilizumab), immunomodulators (i.e. azathioprine or 6-mercaptopurine), and bismuth subsalicylate on clinical response in microscopic colitis (i.e. lymphocytic- and collagenous colitis) as defined by included studies (e.g., reduction of stool frequency) assessed in a systematic review and meta-analysis.
- Study Type Included
- All study design will be included (including case series with more than 10 participants).
- Condition Being Studied
- Microscopic colitis (i.e. lymphocytic- and collagenous colitis).
- Participant
- Inclusion criteria: Adults (18+ years) with microscopic colitis (i.e. lymphocytic- and collagenous colitis).
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Studies are eligible for the present project if they include (at least) one treatment group in which either biologics, immunomodulators, and/or bismuth subsalicylate is administered for microscopic colitis.
- Comparator Control
- Not applicable
- Main Outcome
- Primary outcome measure: Clinical response as defined by included studies (i.e., reduction of stool frequency). Secondary outcomes: 1) Histological response as defined by included studies; 2) quality of life if assessed by a validated scoring system, and 3) the occurrence of any adverse events. Measures of effect Relative risk (RR) or odds ratio (OR) for cohort and case-control studies, and prevalence for case series included.
