Title
Polychlorinated biphenyl exposure and the risk of endometriosis: a systematic review protocol
Review Question
Is polychlorinated biphenyl exposure a risk factor for endometriosis?
Study Type Included
We will select all studies which have defined PCB exposure and endometriosis risk. All retrospective and prospective observational studies, including cross-sectional designs, traditional case-control designs, prospective case-control designs (case-cohort/nested case-control studies) and different cohort designs will be included in our systematic review and meta-analysis. Case reports, case series studies, in vitro studies, and animal studies will be excluded.
Condition Being Studied
Polychlorinated biphenyl exposure and endometriosis (endometriosis is a gynecological disorder that is increasing in prevalence, although its etiology is unclear).
Participant
Endometriosis patients (with the severity of endometriosis I, II, III, IV) aged 18-49 years, with a diagnosis of endometriosis confirmed by laparoscopy.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Polychlorinated biphenyl exposure and the risk of endometriosis. The exposure/risk factor will be analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). As such, we will select all primary studies which used these methods for PCBs measurement in blood and serum. All observational studies not using the GC or GC-MS method will be excluded.
Comparator Control
None.
Main Outcome
Endometriosis.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Stage of endometriosis.
Study Method
Epidemiologic, Systematic review
