- Title
- A systematic review on the effects of intake of beta-glucan on appetite and satiety
- Review Question
- Does intake of ß-glucans influence markers of appetite and satiety in healthy adults?
- Study Type Included
- Acute and chronic randomised controlled trials in humans. Both parallel and crossover studies will be considered suitable. Evidence from acute and chronic studies will be considered separately. Observational and animal studies will be excluded.
- Condition Being Studied
- Measures of appetite and satiety including ad libitum energy intake, subjective appetite ratings (hunger, fullness, desire to eat) and selected gut hormones (PYY, CCK, GLP-1).
- Participant
- Inclusion – Healthy adults (aged 18-65 years) of any gender that are normal weight, overweight or obese, including those with hyperlipidaemia. Exclusion – Children, adolescents (age <18 years) or older adults (aged >65 years). Subjects with reported chronic diseases such as cancer and type 2 diabetes.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Beta-glucans from various sources (oats, barley, supplements). Any interventions which are concurrent with other interventions (e.g. beta-glucan plus another fibre) will not be considered to be suitable for inclusion.
- Comparator Control
- An appropriate control food is similar to the intervention but does not contain any ß-glucan or other soluble fibre. The control could include an insoluble fibre. Comparison with other types of soluble fibres will be excluded.
- Main Outcome
- Energy intake Measures of effect Can include energy intake from acute ad libitum meals and mean 24-h intake
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Subjective appetite measure assessed using Visual Analogue Scale ratings or equivalent for variable such as hunger, fullness and desire to eat Plasma gut hormones: peptide YY, cholecystokinin and glucagon-like peptide 1
