- Title
- Adaptogens on depression-related symptoms and outcomes: A systematic integrative review
- Review Question
- The patient, intervention, comparison, outcome (PICO) model was utilized for structuring our research question: P (subjects aged >18 years old with symptoms and/or diagnosed depression) I (supplementation with adaptogens) C (placebo or baseline measures [pre-post]) O (depression-related symptoms and outcomes). What are the effects of adaptogens supplementation on depression-related symptoms and outcomes in adults (>18 years old)? As a secondary outcome, we'll report the physical activity level as covariable (if available) to aid the planning and commissioning of future research for the potential combination.
- Study Type Included
- Clinical trials (randomized or not), case studies, and comprehensive systematic reviews
- Condition Being Studied
- Depression
- Participant
- Subjects aged >18 years old with symptoms and/or diagnosed depression
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Supplementation with the following adaptogens: Panax (ginseng), Hypericum perforatum, Pfaffia paniculata, Rauwolfia serpentina, Rhodiola Rosea, Withania somnífera (Ashwagandha), Eleutherococcus senticosus, Centella asiatica, Camellia sinensis, Astragalus, Valeriana officinalis, Schisandra chinensis, Lepidium meyenii (Maca) and Cordyceps
- Comparator Control
- Comparison to placebo or non-exposed control group (where available)
- Main Outcome
- Effects on rating scales (e.g., TDI-E, BDI, CES-D, HRSD, etc.), biomarkers (e.g., BDNF, TNF-α, IL-6, 5-HT1A, etc.), and image diagnosis (e.g., RMN, CAT, PET). Measures of effect We will extract the changes from the baseline (mean change and SDs of the changes) in the experimental interventions (Adaptogens) and the comparator interventions (placebo or non-exposed control). The change values will be expressed as the percentage change of the group supplemented with adaptogens according to the formula: ((postpre)/pre) × 100
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- In addition, the physical activity level of the studied population will be set as covariable and extracted from the article information if available. Measures of effect Physical activity level as reported in descriptive statistics or population characteristics.
