- (1)Dose rhubarb could improve animal models (rats and mice) with diabetic nephropathy? (2)What mechanism does rhubarb affect to improve animal models with diabetic nephropathy? (3)What is the ingredient that rhubarb plays an significant role in improving animal models with diabetic nephropathy? Context and rationale Rhubarb is a traditional Chinese medicine and often used as a laxative in the past. Recently, multiple studies have applied rhubarb to treat diabetic nephropathy (DN). Anthraquinones including emodin and rhein have been extracted from rhubarb and used to explore the effective components and mechanism of rhubarb for DN. Evaluating the efficacy of rhubarb may provide a scientific reference for the clinical application of rhubarb for the treatment of DN.

- Inclusion criteria: The diabetic nephropathy animal model (rats or mice, regardless of gender, weight, modeling method) was induced to meet the standard of diabetic nephropathy, blood glucose ≥ 16.65 mmol / L Exclusion criteria: Other animal models except rats and mice (eg. patients, in vitro cells, rabbits, dogs and other animal models)

- Inclusion criteria: Rhubarb (including rhubarb, emodin and rhein) was given by gavage, with unlimited administration time, frequency and dose Exclusion criteria: Animals with rhubarb compound treatment , or rhubarb was administrated in other ways (such as intravenous injection or intraperitoneal injection)

- Inclusion criteria: Vehicle-treated animals, sham-treated animals(saline or distilled water), animals undergoing no treatment Exclusion criteria: Animals with western medicine, other traditional Chinese medicine or integrated Chinese and Western medicine

- Inclusion criteria: Glucose, HbA1c, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, albumin creatinine ratio, 24h urine protein, urinary albumin excretion, kidney index,(two kidneys weight/body weight), tubulointerstitial injury index, TGF-β1, α-SMA, E-cad, podocin, nephrin mRNA and protein Exclusion criteria: Kidney index( one kidney weight/body weight)
