Review Question
Are Ibogaine and Noribogaine effective in treating Substance Use Disorder (SUD)? What is its effectiveness in the management of craving and withdrawal syndromes? Which drugs is it most associated with? What are the most effective protocols?
Study Type Included
All original papers written in English will be considered in this review (open-label or double-blind studies, prospective or retrospective observational studies, case series and case reports).
Condition Being Studied
Ibogaine. Noribogaine. Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Addiction. Craving.
Participant
Inclusion criteria: only subjects affected by Substance Use Disorder (SUD) or in addiction treated with Ibogaine or Noribogaine. Exclusion criteria: all subjects suffering from other psychiatric or medical illnesses not treated with Ibogaine or Noribogaine. No restrictions based on socio-demographic variables (e.g. gender or age).

Intervention
Ibogaine and Noribogaine are psychedelic substances with dissociative properties that occur naturally in plants of the Apocynaceae family. Preliminary research has shown their efficacy in the treatment of drug addiction, particularly in detoxification from opiates. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the role of ibogaine and noribogaine in the treatment of SUD, craving and withdrawal syndromes. Furthermore, we want to investigate the pathophysiology of these disorders and analyze the mechanisms of action of Ibogaine and Noribogaine, as well as the therapeutic advantages offered by these drugs compared to current treatments.
Comparator Control
Main Outcome
The evaluation of the efficacy, the mechanism of action and the therapeutic advantages of Ibogaine and Noribogaine in treatment of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) or in addiction or for the treatment of craving or withdrawal syndromes. Measures of effect If applicable frequencies will be discussed as percentage, and the absolute number as mean ± standard deviation. All this procedures will being preformed used SPSS 25.0. If a clear data will be shown, a meta-analysis of the prevalence of the use will be performed (Odd Ratio expressed as 95% confidence interval).
