- Title
- The effect of anthocyanin on cognitive performance and mood: A systematic review and meta-analysis of trials
- Review Question
- The purpose of this review is to summarise the evidence about the acute and long-term effect of anthocyanin-rich foods and supplementation on mood and cognition within a broad spectrum of participants of all ages in randomized controlled human clinical trials. The question used to guide the search, based on PICO method, is: Population: healthy and non-healthy participants of all ages Intervention: Anthocyanin foods and supplementation Comparison: placebo ( control group) Outcomes: concentration, ability to perform cognitive tasks, school-related work in the younger population, short and long term memory outcomes in middle-aged and older population, mood,

- Intervention
- Anthocyanin foods and supplementation. As a subclass of dietary flavonoids, anthocyanins are responsible for the purple, red and blue pigmentation in plant-based foods. Over 600 individual anthocyanins have been reported in different glycosylated and acylated forms, including pelargonidin, cyanidin, delphinidin, peonidin, petunidin, and malvidin. Berries specifically blueberries and strawberries are major sources of anthocyanin as well as cherries and plums; vegetables such as red and black beans, and red cabbage and onion; and beverages such as red wine, and cranberry and red grape juice. Recent reviews suggest that consumption of anthocyanin-rich food is followed by various benefits in health outcomes such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive outcomes, and diabetes.
- Comparator Control
- Placebo or usual control or standard care
- Main Outcome
- The outcome data to be collected will be the effect of anthocyanin on concentration, ability to perform cognitive tasks (such as Sustained attention, Selective attention, Divided attention, Long-term memory, Working memory, Logic and reasoning, Auditory processing, Visual processing, Processing speed), mood, school-related work in the younger population, short and long term memory outcomes in middle-aged and older population Measures of effect Calculating the mean differences between the intervention group and control group
