- Title
- Effectiveness of Anthocyanin-rich foods on bone health of middle-aged and older adults at risk of osteoporosis: A Systematic Review, Meta-Analysis and Meta-Regression
- Review Question
- (1) Comparing to a control group, are anthocyanin-rich foods effective in improving bone health in middle-aged and older adults (≥40 years old) at risk of osteoporosis? (2) What are the potential moderators that may influence the anthocyanin-rich foods’ effectiveness?
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion: Randomised control trials (RCT) Exclusion: Quasi-experimental trials, observational studies and reviews
- Condition Being Studied
- Bone health
- Participant
- Inclusion: All studies enrolling middle-aged and older adults (≥40 years old) at risk of osteoporosis consuming Anthocyanin-rich food. Exclusion: Participants on hormone replacement therapy, anti-osteoporotic medications like bisphosphonates, anabolic medications like parathyroid, growth hormone, steroids medications, regular resistance trainings, history of bone diseases, any surgical or pharmacological treatment that may influence bone biomarkers (bone remodelling).
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- All studies that include the consumption of Anthocyanin-rich food
- Comparator Control
- No restrictions on the type of comparators (ie. usual diet or placebo)
- Main Outcome
- Bone remodelling biomarkers including: -Bone formation markers: Bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP), Osteocalcin (OC), Procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide (P1NP), -Bone resorption markers: Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRAP5b), C-terminal collagen cross-links (CTX) -Regulators of bone turnover: Sclerostin, Receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL), Osteoprotegerin (OPG). Measures of effect Mean differences or standardised mean differences between intervention and usual care/placebo control group, along with p values and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- C-reactive protein (CRP), insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) and bone mineral density (BMD) Measures of effect Mean differences or standardised mean differences between intervention and usual care/placebo control group, along with p values and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).
