Title
Combination effects of herbal medicine with calcium or vitamin D supplements for primary osteoporosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Review Question
Is the combination of herbal medicine with calcium or vitamin D supplements more effective in improving bone mineral density in patients with primary osteoporosis than calcium or vitamin D supplements alone?
Study Type Included
must be RCTs
Condition Being Studied
Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and micro architectural deterioration of bone tissue, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture by World Health Organization (WHO). The socioeconomic burden caused by osteoporosis is at a serious level. Calcium and vitamin D have been widely used as supplements that play an important role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. However, several studies have reported in recent years that calcium and vitamin D have little efficacy in lowering the risk of fractures in osteoporosis. Meanwhile, there are studies showing that herbal medicine had a significant effect on improving BMD in osteoporosis patients. From this point of view, this author thought that for patients with primary osteoporosis, taking herbal medicine and supplements together would have the effect of improving BMD more significantly than a single dose of supplement. Many previous studies analyzed the effects of taking herbal medicine and supplements in combination with osteoporosis, but there have been no studies that have reviewed and systematically analyzed the studies so far.
