Title
Calcium phosphate-based biomaterials: a systematic review of additive and performance on animal experiments
Review Question
What additives are added to improve the performance of calcium phosphate biomaterials in animal experiments? What common outcome measures are evaluated and reported? Context and rationale Calcium phosphate is a grafting material that is both bioactive and biodegradable. Due to its superior biological properties, probable resorbability, molding capabilities, and ease of manipulation, this material has been intensively explored. In recent years, this material has had clinical success in a variety of dental and orthopedic applications. Furthermore, certain of its properties, like as injectability or low-temperature setting, which allows the incorporation of various medications, make them particularly appealing candidates. The purpose of this systematic review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the performance of calcium phosphate as a carrier of various additives in animal experiments, including drugs, ions, amino acids and peptides, nucleic acids, and cells.
Study Type Included
Inclusion criteria: Randomized or non-randomized controlled animal experimental studies. Exclusion criteria: Letters, commentaries, case reports, reviews, short communications, correspondences, and conference abstracts.
Condition Being Studied
Participant
Animal
Inclusion criteria: Any animal study involving the implatation of calcium phosphate biomaterials with additives. Controlled animal experiments involving experimental group and at least six animals per test group, whether randomized or non-randomized. Exclusion criteria: Ex vivo studies, in-vitro studies, studies in humans. Studies with less than 6 animals per group.
Human Disease Modelled
Bone defects that need grafting and reconstruction using bone substitutes.
Intervention
Inclusion criteria: Biomaterials based on calcium phosphate with one kind of additive were implanted into animals. No limitation to the observation period was placed. Exclusion criteria: Calcium phosphate without any additives was investigated in studies. Calcium phosphate integrated with more than one additive was investigated.
Comparator Control
Inclusion criteria: Animals implanted with calcium phosphate There are no restrictions on the location of implantation. Exclusion criteria: Studies involving fewer than six animals in each control group.
Main Outcome
Outcome Measure
Inclusion criteria: Bibliographic information, kind of base material, type of additive, animal species, strain, animal model, implanted site, observation duration, significant outcome, and conclusion on improvement were among the information collected. Exclusion criteria: None of those indicated above.
