Title
Histologic and Histomorphometric analysis of Sinus Floor Elevation using Biphasic Calcium Phosphate or Beta-Tricalcium Phosphate: A systematic review
Review Question
Is biphasic calcium phosphate or beta-tricalcium phosphate favorable for a sinus lift regarding newly formed bone and residual bone graft?
Study Type Included
Experimental studies: randomized controlled/uncontrolled trials; Observational studies: retrospective and prospective studies.
Condition Being Studied
Histomorphometric analysis of newly formed bone and residual graft particles after sinus floor elevation with biphasic calcium phosphate or beta-tricalcium phosphate.
Participant
Inclusion criteria: - healthy human subjects; Exclusion criteria: - systemic diseases - cigarette smoking
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
1. A lateral approach of maxillary sinus lift surgery in which the sinus is accessed through a window prepared in the buccal side of the sinus. After elevation of the Schneiderian membrane, the created space is filled by the biphasic calcium phosphate, beta-tricalcium phosphate, or other bone graft to provide adequate bone in which to place the implants after the healing period (6-9 months). 2. After the healing period bone biopsies for histomorphometric analysis are obtained during the preparation of the implant site.
Comparator Control
To compare the effect on new bone formation after maxillary sinus lift using biphasic calcium phosphate, beta-tricalcium phosphate, or other bone graft materials (autograft, allograft, xenograft).
Main Outcome
The percentage of newly formed bone and remaining bone substitute particles rate. Measures of effect The percentage will be determined by histomorphometric analysis of bone biopsies obtained during implant site preparation.
