- Title
- Effects of menthol on breathing sensations: A systematic review
- Review Question
- What effect does menthol have on perceptual and physiological respiratory outcomes in humans? Objectives of this review are to describe: 1.) Methods of menthol administration [including products and formulations]. 2.) Comparators and contexts [laboratory, clinical settings]. 3.) Population groups recruited into menthol studies. 4.) Outcomes [perceptual, physiological, adverse events] reported in previous studies.
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion: All full text primary studies published in peer reviewed journals [Including experimental, non-experimental and qualitative studies]. Exclusion Grey literature [non peer reviewed], secondary analysis of primary data sets, reviews, editorials and conference abstracts.
- Condition Being Studied
- Chronic breathlessness is a feeling of breathing discomfort which persists despite optimal medical management and is a common distressing symptom of a wide range of chronic health conditions. Menthol has been proposed as having potential to reduce sensations of breathlessness.
- Participant
- Inclusion: All human participants across all age groups and health status. Excluded: Animal /mathematical modelling studies.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Inclusion: All available full text primary studies which report: 1.) Administration of menthol to participants as part of an intervention. 2.) Perceptual or physiological respiratory outcomes. Eligible studies may include: - The use of menthol or any of its stereo-isomers, or commercial products containing menthol in the formulation. - All intervention lengths including acute studies. - All contexts (Community based, clinical trials etc) and intervention methodologies (exercise interventions, passive breathing etc) - Use of cigarettes or vape products containing menthol. Exclusion: Studies will be excluded if: - Menthol has been used for alternate reasons and respiratory outcomes have not been reported. For example, the use of topical creams for muscular pain.
- Comparator Control
- All comparators are eligible for inclusion.
- Main Outcome
- The primary outcomes of interest for this review concern respiratory perceptions and physiological assessments. Rather than pre-specify outcomes, we are interested in describing which perceptual and/or physiological outcomes [including adverse events] have been used to explore effect of menthol. Measures of effect Main outcomes will be reported descriptively. Where available, effect size (standardised mean difference, 95% Confidence limits) will be reported/calculated for the respiratory outcomes [perceptual and physiological] based on mean, standard deviation and sample size for each outcome where available.
