Title
Menthol versus non-menthol cigarette use and smoking initiation, cessation, and dependence: a systematic review
Review Question
KQ1: Does menthol cigarette use have a differential impact on initiation and progression to regular smoking compared to non-menthol cigarette use? KQ2: Does menthol cigarette use have a differential impact on smoking cessation compared to non-menthol cigarette use? KQ3: Does menthol cigarette use have a differential impact on smoking dependence compared to non-menthol cigarette use?
Study Type Included
Included: Randomised trials, non-randomised trials, and observational studies (cohort, case-control and cross-sectional) that provide original dataExcluded: Reviews, case reports, letters and editorials not containing original data
Condition Being Studied
The behaviours of smoking initiation and progression to regular smoking, smoking cessation, and smoking dependence
Participant
Inclusion: Youth, young adults and adults in the U.S. population who are current or former smokers of traditional cigarettes. Studies that included people who never smoked will also be included as long as they were longitudinal and reported initiation of smoking. Studies of solely non-U. S. residents will be excluded.

Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Inclusion: traditional cigarettes with menthol as a characterizing flavor Exclusion: non-traditional tobacco delivery systems (e.g., electronic cigarettes, vaporizers, hookahs)
Comparator Control
Inclusion: traditional non-menthol cigarettes Exclusion: electronic cigarettes
Main Outcome
Differences between menthol and non-menthol smokers in multi-item scales of the smoking behaviours of interest as well as selected single-item measures that include but are not limited to: KQ1: Age of smoking initiation, trajectory of progression to regular smoking and daily smoking in terms of increase in smoking over time KQ2: Measures of cessation such as quit attempts, duration of abstinence, rate of abstinence/quitting, rate of return to smoking, change in smoking quantity/frequency KQ3: Measures of smoking dependence as measured by multi-item scales of dependence (e.g., Fagerström Test of Nicotine Dependence) and single-item measures (e.g., duration of times as a smoker; daily versus non-daily smoking) Measures of effect We will not place any restrictions on timing of observations and/or measurements.
