- Review Question
- What are the traditional medicinal uses of Erythrina abyssinica? What chemical compounds are present in Erythrina abyssinica that are responsible for its medicinal properties? What is the efficacy and safety of extracts and pure compounds of Erythrina abyssinica in different disease models?
- Condition
- Globally, there has been an increase in natural products research in the last two decades and Erythrina abyssinica (fabaceae) is among those medicinal plants that has been widely researched on. E. abyssinica is among the highly ranked important medicinal plants in the East African region. Many surveys have documented that this plant is harvested by traditional herbal medicine practitioners to prepare herbal remedies for various human and livestock ailments. Several scientific studies have validated the claimed pharmacological activities of this plant and have confirmed that its extracts and pure compounds possesses significant in vitro and in vivo efficacies against various diseases. These versatile pharmacological activities have been attributed to its rich chemical diversity. New and already known chemical compounds have been isolated and characterized from this plant. However, all the data pertaining it is highly fragmented in different journals, books, university libraries and other publication media platforms. This purpose of this review is to synthesize consolidated scientific evidence to support the traditional use of E. abyssinica and also identify new chemical compounds and templates that can be developed into drugs.
