性状
栝楼 呈扁平椭圆形，长12～15mm，宽6～10mm，厚约3.5mm。表面浅棕色至棕褐色，平滑，沿边缘有1圈沟纹。顶端较尖，有种脐，基部钝圆或较狭。种皮坚硬；内种皮膜质，灰绿色，子叶2，黄白色，富油性。气微，味淡。 双边栝楼 较大而扁，长15～19mm，宽8～10mm，厚约2.5mm。表面棕褐色，沟纹明显而环边较宽。顶端平截。
检查
水分 不得过10.0%（通则0832第二法）。 总灰分 不得过3.0%（通则2302）。
注意
不宜与川乌、制川乌、草乌、制草乌、附子同用。
炮制
除去杂质和干瘪的种子，洗净，晒干。用时捣碎。
贮藏
置阴凉干燥处，防霉，防蛀。
鉴别
（1）本品粉末暗红棕色。种皮表皮细胞表面观呈类多角形或不规则形，平周壁具稍弯曲或平直的角质条纹。石细胞单个散在或数个成群，棕色，呈长条形、长圆形、类三角形或不规则形，壁波状弯曲或呈短分枝状。星状细胞淡棕色、淡绿色或几无色，呈不规则长方形或长圆形，壁弯曲，具数个短分枝或突起，枝端钝圆。螺纹导管直径20～40μm。 （2）取本品粉末1g，加石油醚（60～90℃）10ml，超声处理10分钟，滤过，滤液作为供试品溶液。另取3，29-二苯甲酰基栝楼仁三醇对照品，加三氯甲烷制成每1ml含0.12mg的溶液，作为对照品溶液。照薄层色谱法（通则0502）试验，吸取上述两种溶液各10μl，分别点于同一硅胶G薄层板上，以环己烷-乙酸乙酯（5∶1）为展开剂，展开，取出，晾干，喷以10%硫酸乙醇溶液，在105℃加热至斑点显色清晰。供试品色谱中，在与对照品色谱相应的位置上，显相同颜色的斑点。
浸出物
照醇溶性浸出物测定法（通则2201）项下的冷浸法测定，用石油醚（60～90℃）作溶剂，不得少于24.0%。
