本品为不规则鳞片状或粉末，乳白色、黄白色、灰白色或青灰色，无光泽或微显光泽。质脆，易碎。气微，味淡。
检查
酸不溶性灰分 取本品粉末2g，置炽灼至恒重的坩埚中，炽灼至完全灰化，加入稀盐酸约20ml，照酸不溶性灰分测定法（通则2302）测定，不得过4.0%。 饮片
炮制
珍珠母 除去杂质，打碎。
贮藏
置干燥处，防尘。
鉴别
（1）本品粉末类白色。不规则碎块，表面多不平整，呈明显的颗粒性，有的呈层状结构，边缘多数为不规则锯齿状。棱柱形碎块少见，断面观呈棱柱状，断面大多平截，有明显的横向条纹，少数条纹不明显。 （2）取本品粉末，加稀盐酸，即产生大量气泡，滤过，滤液显钙盐（通则0301）的鉴别反应。
功能与主治
平肝潜阳，安神定惊，明目退翳。用于头痛眩晕，惊悸失眠，目赤翳障，视物昏花。
性味与归经
咸，寒。归肝、心经。
用法与用量
10～25g，先煎。
