本品形如牛蒡子，色泽加深，略鼓起。微有香气。

牛蒡子除去杂质，洗净，干燥。用时捣碎。

贮藏

置通风干燥处。

鉴别

（1）本品粉末灰褐色。内果皮石细胞略扁平，表面观呈尖梭形、长椭圆形或尖卵圆形，长70～224μm，宽13～70μm，壁厚约至20μm，木化，纹孔横长；侧面观类长方形或长条形，侧弯。中果皮网纹细胞横断面观类多角形，垂周壁具细点状增厚；纵断面观细胞延长，壁具细密交叉的网状纹理。草酸钙方晶直径3～9μm，成片存在于黄色的中果皮薄壁细胞中，含晶细胞界限不分明。子叶细胞充满糊粉粒，有的糊粉粒中有细小簇晶，并含脂肪油滴。（2）取本品粉末0.5g，加乙醇20ml，超声处理30分钟，滤过，滤液蒸干，残渣加乙醇2ml使溶解，作为供试品溶液。另取牛蒡子对照药材0.5g，同法制成对照药材溶液。再取牛蒡苷对照品，加乙醇制成每1ml含5mg的溶液，作为对照品溶液。照薄层色谱法（通则0502）试验，吸取供试品溶液及对照药材溶液各3μl、对照品溶液5μl，分别点于同一硅胶G薄层板上，以三氯甲烷-甲醇-水（40∶8∶1）为展开剂，展开，取出，晾干，喷以10%硫酸乙醇溶液，在105℃加热至斑点显色清晰。供试品色谱中，在与对照药材色谱和对照品色谱相应的位置上，显相同颜色的斑点。

照醇溶性浸出物测定法（通则2201）项下的热浸法测定，用无水乙醇作溶剂，不得少于27.0%。
