本品呈长圆锥形，长4～7cm，基部直径1.5～2.5cm。红棕色至棕褐色。花被多为12片，肉质，外层的呈长方倒卵形，内层的呈匙形。雄蕊多数，花药条形，淡黄棕色，花丝宽而短。心皮多数，分离，螺旋状排列于圆锥形的花托上。花梗长0.5～2cm，具稀疏的灰黄色绒毛或无毛。质脆，易破碎。气香，味淡。
检查
水分 不得过10.0%（通则0832第三法）。 总灰分 不得过7.0%（通则2302）。
贮藏
置干燥处，防霉，防蛀。
鉴别
（1）本品粉末黄棕色。花被表皮细胞多角形或椭圆形，表面有密集的疣状突起，有的具细条状纹理。石细胞众多，呈不规则分枝状，壁厚7～13μm，孔沟明显，胞腔大。油细胞类圆形或椭圆形，直径37～85μm，壁稍厚，内含黄棕色物。花粉粒椭圆形，长径48～68μm，短径37～48μm，具一远极沟，表面有细网状雕纹。 （2）取本品粉末1g，加甲醇8ml，密塞，振摇30分钟，滤过，取滤液作为供试品溶液。另取厚朴酚对照品、和厚朴酚对照品，加甲醇制成每1ml各含1mg的混合溶液，作为对照品溶液。照薄层色谱法（通则0502）试验，吸取供试品溶液10μl、对照品溶液5μl，分别点于同一硅胶G薄层板上，以环己烷-二氯甲烷-乙酸乙酯-浓氨试液（5∶2∶4∶0.5）为展开剂，展开，取出，晾干，喷以1%香草醛硫酸溶液，在100℃加热至斑点显色清晰。供试品色谱中，在与对照品色谱相应的位置上，显相同颜色的斑点。
含量测定
照高效液相色谱法（通则0512）测定。 色谱条件与系统适用性试验 以十八烷基硅烷键合硅胶为填充剂；以甲醇-乙腈-水（50∶20∶30）为流动相；检测波长为294nm。理论板数按厚朴酚峰计算应不低于1500。 对照品溶液的制备 取厚朴酚对照品、和厚朴酚对照品适量，精密称定，加甲醇分别制成每1ml含厚朴酚60μg、和厚朴酚40μg的溶液，即得。 供试品溶液的制备 取本品粗粉约1g，精密称定，置具塞锥形瓶中，精密加入甲醇25ml，密塞，称定重量，超声处理30分钟，放冷，再称定重量，用甲醇补足减失的重量，摇匀，放置30分钟，取上清液，滤过，取续滤液，即得。 测定法 分别精密吸取上述两种对照品溶液与供试品溶液各10μl，注入液相色谱仪，测定，即得。 本品含厚朴酚（C18H18O2）与和厚朴酚（C18H18O2）的总量不得少于0.20%。
功能与主治
芳香化湿，理气宽中。用于脾胃湿阻气滞，胸脘痞闷胀满，纳谷不香。

苦，微温。归脾、胃经。
