性状
本品呈类圆形或不规则形的厚片。外表皮灰棕色或棕黄色，有时可见横长皮孔样突起，外皮薄，常破裂反卷或脱落，脱落处显黄色或棕黄色，光滑。切面黄白色，纤维性，具放射状纹理和裂隙，有的可见同心性环纹。气微，味极苦。

水分 不得过11.0%（通则0832第二法）。 总灰分 不得过8.0%（通则2302）。
注意
不宜与藜芦同用。
炮制
除去残留根头，大小分开，洗净，浸泡至约六成透时，润透，切厚片，干燥。
贮藏
置干燥处。
鉴别
（1）本品粉末淡黄色。木栓细胞淡棕色，横断面观呈扁长方形，壁微弯曲；表面观呈类多角形，平周壁表面有不规则细裂纹，垂周壁有纹孔呈断续状。纤维和晶纤维，多成束；纤维细长，直径11～27μm，壁厚，非木化；纤维束周围的细胞含草酸钙方晶，形成晶纤维，含晶细胞的壁不均匀增厚。草酸钙方晶，呈类双锥形、菱形或多面形，直径约至23μm。淀粉粒，单粒类圆形或长圆形，直径2～20μm，脐点裂缝状，大粒层纹隐约可见；复粒较多，由2～12分粒组成。 （2）取本品横切片，加氢氧化钠试液数滴，栓皮即呈橙红色，渐变为血红色，久置不消失。木质部不呈现颜色反应。 （3）取本品粉末0.5g，加浓氨试液0.3ml、三氯甲烷25ml，放置过夜，滤过，滤液蒸干，残渣加三氯甲烷0.5ml使溶解，作为供试品溶液。另取苦参碱对照品、槐定碱对照品，加乙醇制成每1ml各含0.2mg的混合溶液，作为对照品溶液。照薄层色谱法（通则0502）试验，吸取上述两种溶液各4μl，分别点于同一用2%氢氧化钠溶液制备的硅胶G薄层板上，以甲苯-丙酮-甲醇（8∶3∶0.5）为展开剂，展开，展距8cm，取出，晾干，再以甲苯-乙酸乙酯-甲醇-水（2∶4∶2∶1）10℃以下放置的上层溶液为展开剂，展开，取出，晾干，依次喷以碘化铋钾试液和亚硝酸钠乙醇试液。供试品色谱中，在与对照品色谱相应的位置上，显相同的橙色斑点。 （4）取氧化苦参碱对照品，加乙醇制成每1ml含0.2mg的溶液，作为对照品溶液。照薄层色谱法（通则0502）试验，吸取〔鉴别〕（3）项下的供试品溶液和上述对照品溶液各4μl，分别点于同一用2%氢氧化钠溶液制备的硅胶G薄层板上，以三氯甲烷-甲醇-浓氨试液（5∶0.6∶0.3）10℃以下放置的下层溶液为展开剂，展开，取出，晾干，依次喷以碘化铋钾试液和亚硝酸钠乙醇试液。供试品色谱中，在与对照品色谱相应的位置上，显相同的橙色斑点。
