本品为无色或微黄色的澄清液体；有特异的芳香气，微似樟脑，味辛、凉。贮存日久，色稍变深。 本品在70%乙醇中易溶。 相对密度 应为0.895～0.920（通则0601）。 折光率 应为1.458～1.468（通则0622）。
检查
水茴香烃 取本品2.5ml，加石油醚（60～90℃）12.5ml，摇匀，加亚硝酸钠溶液（5→8）5ml，再缓缓加入冰醋酸5ml，搅匀，10分钟内不得析出结晶。 重金属 取本品1g，依法检查（通则0821第二法），不得过10mg/kg。
贮藏
遮光，密封，置阴凉处。
鉴别
取本品0.1ml，加无水乙醇使成1ml，振摇使溶解，作为供试品溶液。另取桉油精对照品，同法制成对照品溶液。照薄层色谱法（通则0502）试验，吸取上述两种溶液各2μl，分别点于同一硅胶G薄层板上，以环己烷-乙酸乙酯（9.5∶0.5）为展开剂，展开，取出，晾干，喷以1%香草醛硫酸溶液。供试品色谱中，在与对照品色谱相应的位置上，显相同颜色的斑点。
含量测定
取本品，照桉油精含量测定法（通则2203）测定，即得。 本品含桉油精（C10H18O）不得少于70.0%（g/g）。
