本品为浅棕色或深棕色的澄清液体；气特异，味微苦而辛。 本品在甲醇、乙醇、丙酮、乙酸乙酯、三氯甲烷、乙醚、甲苯或石油醚中易溶，几乎不溶于水。 相对密度 应为0.970～0.990（通则0601）。 比旋度 取本品，加乙醇制成每1ml中含50mg的溶液，依法测定（通则0621），比旋度应为+20°～+25°。 折光率 应为1.500～1.510（通则0622）。
检查
重金属 取本品2g，依法检查，不得过10mg/kg（通则0821第二法）。 砷盐 取本品1g，置坩埚中，加等量氢氧化钙，搅匀，先缓缓加热炭化，再在500～600℃灰化，冷却，加盐酸5ml，加水23ml使溶解，依法检查（通则0822第一法）。含砷不得过2mg/kg。
贮藏
遮光，密封，置阴凉处。
鉴别
取本品4mg，加石油醚（60～90℃）1ml使溶解，作为供试品溶液。另取莪术醇对照品、牻牛儿酮对照品和莪术二酮对照品，分别加石油醚（60～90℃）制成每1ml含0.5mg的溶液，作为对照品溶液。照薄层色谱法（通则0502）试验，吸取上述四种溶液各2μl，分别点于同一硅胶G薄层板上，以石油醚（60～90℃）-乙酸乙酯-冰醋酸（60∶5∶0.5）为展开剂，展开，取出，晾干，喷以5%香草醛硫酸溶液，在105℃加热至斑点显色清晰。供试品色谱中，在与对照品色谱相应的位置上，显相同颜色的斑点。
含量测定
照高效液相色谱法（通则0512）测定。 色谱条件与系统适用性试验 同〔指纹图谱〕项下。 对照品溶液的制备 同〔指纹图谱〕项下参照物溶液的制备。 测定法 分别精密吸取对照品溶液和〔指纹图谱〕项下的供试品溶液各5μl，注入液相色谱仪，测定，即得。 本品含牻牛儿酮（C15H22O）不得少于7.5%，含呋喃二烯（C15H20O）不得少于10.0%。
指纹图谱
照高效液相色谱法（通则0512）测定。 色谱条件与系统适用性试验 以十八烷基硅烷键合硅胶为填充剂；以乙腈为流动相A，水为流动相B，按下表中的规定进行梯度洗脱；检测波长为216nm。理论板数按牻牛儿酮峰计算不低于5000。 参照物溶液的制备 取牻牛儿酮对照品及呋喃二烯对照品适量，精密称定，加无水乙醇制成每1ml含牻牛儿酮30μg、呋喃二烯50μg的混合溶液，即得。 供试品溶液的制备 取本品0.1g，精密称定，置50ml量瓶中，加无水乙醇至刻度，摇匀，精密量取5ml，置25ml量瓶中，加无水乙醇至刻度，摇匀，滤过，取续滤液，即得。 测定法 分别精密吸取参照物溶液和供试品溶液各5μl，注入液相色谱仪，测定，记录色谱图，即得。 供试品指纹图谱中应分别呈现相应的参照物色谱峰保留时间相同的色谱峰。 按中药色谱指纹图谱相似度评价系统计算，供试品指纹图谱与对照指纹图谱的相似度不得低于0.95。 对照指纹图谱 峰4：牻牛儿酮 峰7：呋喃二烯
