本品呈圆形或椭圆形的厚片，直径0.4～1.5cm，厚0.2～0.4cm。外表皮红棕色，略有光泽，可见纵皱纹和残留少数支根痕。切面皮部浅黄色，形成层环浅棕色，木质部浅黄棕色至浅棕色，可见放射状纹理。具蜜香气，味甜，略带黏性，嚼之有豆腥味。
检查
水分 不得过10.0%（通则0832第二法）。 总灰分 不得过5.0%（通则2302）。
炮制
取红芪片，照蜜炙法（通则0213）炒至不粘手。
贮藏
同红芪。
鉴别
取本品粉末1g，照红芪项下的〔鉴别〕（2）项试验，显相同的结果。
浸出物
照红芪〔浸出物〕项下测定法测定，不得少于35.0%。
功能与主治
补中益气。用于气虚乏力，食少便溏。
