性状
本品呈长球形，中部略细，长0.7～1.2cm，直径0.5～0.7cm。表面红棕色或暗红色，略皱缩，顶端有黄白色管状宿萼，基部有果梗痕。果皮薄，易破碎。种子6，扁圆形或三角状多面形，黑棕色或红棕色，外被黄白色膜质假种皮，胚乳灰白色。气香，味辛辣。
炮制
除去杂质。用时捣碎。
贮藏
置阴凉干燥处。
鉴别
（1）种子横切面：假种皮细胞4～7列，圆形或切向延长，壁稍厚。种皮的外层为1～5列非木化厚壁纤维，呈圆形或多角形，直径13～45μm，其下为1列扁平的黄棕色或深棕色色素细胞；油细胞1列，方形或长方形，直径16～54μm；色素层细胞3～5列，含红棕色物；内种皮为1列栅状厚壁细胞，长约65μm，宽约30μm，黄棕色或红棕色，内壁及靠内方的侧壁极厚，胞腔偏外侧，内含硅质块。外胚乳细胞充满淀粉粒团，偶见草酸钙小方晶。内胚乳细胞含糊粉粒和脂肪油滴。 （2）取本品粉末1g，加乙醚20ml，超声处理10分钟，滤过，残渣再加乙醚10ml洗涤一次，滤过，合并乙醚液，蒸干，残渣加乙酸乙酯1ml使溶解，作为供试品溶液。另取红豆蔻对照药材1g，同法制成对照药材溶液。照薄层色谱法（通则0502）试验，吸取上述两种溶液各5～10μl，分别点于同一硅胶GF254薄层板上，以环己烷-乙酸乙酯（17∶3）为展开剂，展开，取出，晾干，置紫外光灯（254nm）下检视。供试品色谱中，在与对照药材色谱相应的位置上，显三个相同颜色的斑点；喷以5%香草醛硫酸溶液，在105℃加热至斑点显色清晰。供试品色谱中，在与对照药材色谱相应的位置上，显三个相同颜色的斑点。
