Disease Definition
MSH2017_2016_08_12:A clinical syndrome characterized by palpitation, SHORTNESS OF BREATH, labored breathing, subjective complaints of effort and discomfort, all following slight PHYSICAL EXERTION. Other symptoms may be DIZZINESS, tremulousness, SWEATING, and INSOMNIA. Neurocirculatory asthenia is most typically seen as a form of anxiety disorder.MSH2017_2016_08_12:A degenerative disease of the AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM that is characterized by idiopathic ORTHOSTATIC HYPOTENSION and a greatly reduced level of CATECHOLAMINES. No other neurological deficits are present.NCI2016_02D:A condition characterized by development of symptoms while standing. It is an autonomic nervous system disorder and the symptoms are relieved once the person sits back down. Symptoms include heart palpitations, sweating, anxiety, lightheadedness, hyperpnea, anxiety, and blurred vision.|MSH2017_2016_08_12:Symptoms of cerebral hypoperfusion or autonomic overaction which develop while the subject is standing, but are relieved on recumbency. Types of this include NEUROCARDIOGENIC SYNCOPE; POSTURAL ORTHOSTATIC TACHYCARDIA SYNDROME; and neurogenic ORTHOSTATIC HYPOTENSION. (From Noseworthy, JH., Neurological Therapeutics Principles and Practice, 2007, p2575-2576)NCI2016_02D:A syndrome characterized by orthostatic intolerance resulting in tachycardia, often accompanied by a decrease in the blood pressure. It occurs when individuals change from the supine position to an upright position. Other signs and symptoms include lightheadedness, fainting, fatigue and muscle weakness.|MSH2017_2016_08_12:A syndrome of ORTHOSTATIC INTOLERANCE combined with excessive upright TACHYCARDIA, and usually without associated ORTHOSTATIC HYPOTENSION. All variants have in common an excessively reduced venous return to the heart (central HYPOVOLEMIA) while upright.NCI2016_FDA_1602D:Prolapse of the mitral valve, often with regurgitation, associated with myxomatous proliferation of the leaflets of the mitral valve.|NCI2016_02D:A fairly common and often benign valvular heart disorder characterized by redundancy or hooding of mitral valve leaflets so that they prolapse into the left atrium, often causing mitral regurgitation. It is often a symptomless condition but may be marked by varied symptoms (e.g. chest pain, fatigue, dizziness, dyspnea, or palpitations) leading in some cases to endocarditis or ventricular tachycardia.|MSH2017_2016_08_12:Abnormal protrusion or billowing of one or both of the leaflets of MITRAL VALVE into the LEFT ATRIUM during SYSTOLE. This allows the backflow of blood into left atrium leading to MITRAL VALVE INSUFFICIENCY; SYSTOLIC MURMURS; or CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA.|MEDLINEPLUS_20151021:
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) occurs when one of your heart's valves doesn't work properly. The flaps of the valve are "floppy" and don't close tightly. Most people who have the condition are born with it. It also tends to run in families.

Most of the time, MVP doesn't cause any problems. Rarely, blood can leak the wrong way through the floppy valve. This can cause

Palpitations (feelings that your heart is skipping a beat, fluttering, or beating too hard or too fast)

Shortness of breath

Cough

Fatigue, dizziness, or anxiety

Migraine headaches

Chest discomfort

Most people who have mitral valve prolapse (MVP) don't need treatment because they don't have symptoms and complications. If you need treatment for MVP, medicines can help relieve symptoms or prevent complications. Very few people will need surgery to repair or replace the mitral valve.

MVP puts you at risk for infective endocarditis, a kind of heart infection. To prevent it, doctors used to prescribe antibiotics before dental work or certain surgeries. Now, only people at high risk of endocarditis need the antibiotics.

NIH: National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
|HPO2016_07_04:One or both of the leaflets (cusps) of the mitral valve bulges back into the left atrium upon contraction of the left ventricle. [HPO:probinson]NCI2016_NICHD_1602D:A sudden fall in blood pressure upon rising to a standing position.|NCI2016_02D:Sudden fall of the blood pressure of at least 20/10 mm Hg when a person stands up.|MSH2017_2016_08_12:A significant drop in BLOOD PRESSURE after assuming a standing position. Orthostatic hypotension is a finding, and defined as a 20-mm Hg decrease in systolic pressure or a 10-mm Hg decrease in diastolic pressure 3 minutes after the person has risen from supine to standing. Symptoms generally include DIZZINESS, blurred vision, and SYNCOPE.|HPO2016_07_04:A form of hypotension characterized by a sudden fall in blood pressure that occurs when a person assumes a standing position. [HPO:probinson]|CSP2006:fall in blood pressure associated with dizziness, syncope and blurred vision occurring upon standing or when standing motionless in a fixed position.
